The hospital complex is located between the Prinetti, Iesi and Valtorta streets in Milan.
It consists of four basement floors, the ground floor and nine floors above ground as well as the roof.
The plan dimensions of the underground floors is about 80 x 200 m, the two first floors above ground have plan dimension of about 50 x 160 m, while the following above ground floors have plan dimension of about 35 x 160 m.
The total height of the building is about 65 m above ground and about 15 m underground.
The proposed structure is based on versatility and robustness to satisfy even static requirements that can be variable over time and realized with ordinary technology.
The structures are therefore entirely in reinforced concrete cast in situ.
The floors are made of slabs 20 or 25 cm thick with lowered beams arranged in the two main directions: the beams are not provided for the two underground floors intended for parking and for the roof.
The main vertical elements consist of columns arranged with a regular mesh of 8.0 x 8.5 m and the walls that form the stair-lift bodies of 35 cm thickness for the perimeter ones and 30 cm for the internal ones.
The foundation consists of a 2.20 m thick mat.
Along the edges of the excavation, r. c. diaphragms are planned; 60 cm thick anchored with three orders of provisional tie rods along the sides where it is allowed to be made, and cantilevered with an H section with external dimensions 2.50 x 2.50 m elsewhere.
Above ground, the main building is divided into three parts by two expansion joints, while in the underground part the structure is monolithic.
The joints are equipped with appropriate devices (shock transmitters units) that allow relative movements between the three building’s parts due to slow phenomena such as thermal expansion, but make the structure monolithic with respect to the dynamic actions resulting from seismic events.
The building’s resistant system is therefore made up of frames and walls able to absorb both gravitational and horizontal actions produced by earthquake and wind.
From seismic behavior point of view, the resistant structure is configured as a dual wall equivalent system; in fact, the walls absorb more than 50% of the total seismic action.
