The expansion of the S. Carlo hospital in Paderno Dugnano has a total plan size of approximately 90 x 80 m.
In height it can be distinguished two different zones: a front one on two levels above ground with a canopy that reaches a height of about 8 m, and a rear one with four levels above ground plus the roof that reaches a height of about 15,5 m.
The building, based on a regular structural mesh of 7.2 x 7.2, is divided into three parts separated by a full-height joint with a width of 10 cm.
There are two lateral bodies (right and left) with a width of about 36 m and a central body of a width of about 14.5 m.
The central body has a curved roof in glued laminated timber at the front.
An “L” shaped footbridge connects the new building to the existing one.
The foundation is a r.c. mat.
The vertical structures are made up of r.c. cast in place columns and stairwells, which also fulfill the function of bracing the building against the horizontal actions.
The horizontal structures are constituted, almost everywhere by r.c. flat slabs, except for some areas in which they were made using precast hollow core prestressed slabs.
The front roof is made for the flat part with a steel structure while for the curved part with glued laminated timber beams of great span.
