The building in question is a former hospital of about 30,000 sq. m. that has been refurbished and transformed into a building for residences and offices.
The original structure is partly built of masonry and partly of reinforced concrete.
First of all an accurate assessment of the seismic vulnerability and of the static capacity of the various structural elements was carried out.
According to the results obtained, the structure, to which a new floor has been added, has been completely strengthened and retrofitted.
The masonry foundations have been consolidated through the execution of jet-grouting columns.
The masonry vaults and the masonry walls have been strengthened with reinforced concrete thin slabs, while all the floors have been replaced with new ones built of reinforced concrete with lightening elements.
Instead, all the structures of the added floor are made of steel and composite steel and concrete slabs.
The new stairwell and elevator shafts are in reinforced concrete with separate mat foundation
Finally, two underground car parks with reinforced concrete structure are built inside of two of the four courtyards.
